Torremolinos, Andalucía Spain
Once a humble fishing village, Torremolinos evolved into the pioneer of tourism on the Costa del Sol during the 1950s and 60s during the dictator Franco's time.my last visit was in 2008 and it has not changed much but has grown commercially. There is still the lovely winding st airway down to the brace but now a lift for those who want to avoid the steep climb back.
Today, this Mediterranean charming small city is known for its history and beautiful beach. The town's name, Torremolinos means "Tower of the Mills," and originates from the numerous water mills that once dotted the landscape alongside the defensive Torre de Pimentel. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with later settlements by Phoenicians, Romans, and Arabs.
In the mid-20th century, Torremolinos transitioned from a quiet seaside district of Málaga into an international hotspot, attracting icons like Grace Kelly, Frank Sinatra, and Salvador Dalí. It has a legacy of tolerance as during the 1960s, it opened its first gay bar.
