City trips: Salzburg, Austria
A long time age in 1990 I had been to Salzburg and as it's so pretty I wanted to visit again. A 1.45 min train ride from Munich, through scenic mountain ranges of the Austrian Alps, still snow-capped in late April is lovely. Salzburg is small and cosy to walk around. The Fortress on the hill dominates the view over the river, Mozart square and house, up market beautiful shopping streets and beautiful little art galleries. The gardens and park just before the centre deserve a stroll, even if rainy. Well kept and designed, they lead you around or over one of the bridges into the small centre.
It is worth taking the Cable car up to the Fortress as the views are enchanting over all the city church steeples, rivers and lush green vegetation below. Alas due to the rain it was not possible to enjoy the outside terraces but the 14 euro ticket allows much wandering all around and through passages with canons in the windows and an old well and water pump still in medieval form.
Scenes driving into Salzburg by trainTheatre gardens where naturally "Sound of Music" always plays
All shopping streets are pedestrian only and beautifully decorated from high to low
The famous Salzburg church towers
Close to the cable car entrance
Another City fountain next to the cable car
Views from above in the Fortress overlooking the river
After the cable car return do not miss your immediate left churchyard
where 3 small churches and a convent host the prettiest cemetry I've
ever seen. All wrought iron decoration and gated enclosures, hold long
family lines with immaculate gardens.
Beautiful church interiors
Loved this statue in a little side chapel
Typical view whilst walking the inner centre streets
One of the best train station view ever !
The hills are definitely alive with the sound of music.
