City trip: Munich, Germany

I had been to many places in Germany yet not Munich so a spring trip it was. Just as in other places in Europe, besides Spain, it was a lot colder than normal end of April.  A 45 minute train ride from the airport to the centre brings one to the Hauptbahnhof and the AirBnB was about a 15 minute walk.  Munich is large with 1.5 million population with many monumental buildings, spread out similar to Berlin.  Although most of it was bombed in WWII, it was rebuilt in the same style and they've done a good job.  Public transport runs well and you can include a day ticket in your airport train ticket.

The Marianplatz on the hour chimes with dancing figures on the Rathaus

Recommendations for tram 19 were good as it takes you along some of the main sites and across the river.  The main square Mariansplatz is the highlight with the Rathaus, a lovely Gothic building with a huge high statue in front and churches all around. Every hour as the clock chimes the figures in the metal gren clock come out in three layers to dances and ride on a carousel.  Hundreds of tourists stand below filming it, each time I saw it, with all applauding the show when finished.

Also worth visiting is the local market around the corner from Marianplatz which is a neat and tidy actual shops/stalls with a cosy green beer garten.  Many German men walk around in their infamous leather shorts and all hopsitality industry are dressed in traditional clothing.  The other main squares with monuments take some walking, such as Koningsplatz, Josephplatz (which has a huge lovely fountain with statues) and Karlsplatz.
The market flag pole, really high with figurines of typical German scenes
