Travel tips: Marken & Monnikendam NL
The Netherlands is known for its bulbs flowers, cheese the tolerance of
Amsterdam and the International criminal court in the Hague. It is also
known for its picturesque skies which inspired Van Gogh and Rembrandt
and its quaint unique architecture. Characteristic canal houses line
canals in many cities and even small villages, often with the standard
centre square, Church or Cathedral, small boutiques, terraces and flower
shops. Although Amsterdam gets millions of visitors each year, actually
more tourists visit other unique Dutch cities and villages more, for a
real Dutch experience. Away from the cosmopolitan international capital,
one can experience true Dutch culture, still eat raw herring and
photograph the most characteristic housing in the world. This blog will
orientate you in terms of distance to some lovely places less well known
with Amsterdam as the starting point of travel.
North of Amsterdam, approximately half an hour away is Marken. It is
closed to traffic and pedestrian only so you park outside. Inside the
old fishing village where people still live an everyday life, there are old famous wooden Dutch houses in lovely colours with little
streams and bridges. Walk through the centre to the small harbour with boats and
restaurants. Try the famous Dutch raw herring with gherkin and onions or koffie verkeerd (similar to coffee machiatto without the foam) and poffertjes. Little mini pancakes.
