Travel tips: Marken & Monnikendam NL

The Netherlands is known for its bulbs flowers, cheese the tolerance of Amsterdam and the International criminal court in the Hague. It is also known for its picturesque skies which inspired Van Gogh and Rembrandt and its quaint unique architecture. Characteristic canal houses line canals in many cities and even small villages, often with the standard centre square, Church or Cathedral, small boutiques, terraces and flower shops. Although Amsterdam gets millions of visitors each year, actually more tourists visit other unique Dutch cities and villages more, for a real Dutch experience. Away from the cosmopolitan international capital, one can experience true Dutch culture, still eat raw herring and photograph the most characteristic housing in the world. This blog will orientate you in terms of distance to some lovely places less well known with Amsterdam as the starting point of travel. 

North of Amsterdam, approximately half an hour away is Marken. It is closed to traffic and pedestrian only so you park outside. Inside the  old fishing village where people still live an everyday life, there are old famous wooden Dutch houses in lovely colours with little streams and bridges. Walk through the centre to the small harbour with boats and restaurants. Try the famous Dutch raw herring with gherkin and onions or koffie verkeerd (similar to coffee machiatto without the foam) and poffertjes.  Little mini pancakes.

 En route to Marken at the turn off is a lovely little village called Monnikendam. Also absolutely worth an afternoon or morning tour with lunch! It has a small harbour, town centre with church and hall and lovely canals. 

 
After the small centre walk around the canals and enjoy the quaint pretty streets
